Across America and Back (Slideshow)

When the Caldor Fire hit the Lake Tahoe Basin we decided to take a long drive across the country and back, visiting my parents in upstate New York, sister in Colorado, and Michelle’s brother in Connecticut. Normally, I would have been working for the Forest Service and none of this would have been possible at the height of field season, but this year, for the first time in over a decade, that was no longer the case.

There were many reasons we could have found to not travel all the way across the country at this time, but the reasons to go outweighed the reasons to stay and we now know we made the right decision by taking this trip once it was underway.

In terms of landscape and wildlife photography, the best opportunities came in South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana where we gave ourselves enough time to camp, hike, and explore some of the country’s most impressive national parks just before they were hit by the first winter storms of the season.
